Industry Standards for Passenger Transit, Rail Vehicle Specifications

Human Engineering

Ergonomics, General

Ergonomic interface is extremely important both to passengers and vehicle operators. Passengers that are not comfortable when riding on transit vehicles are unlikely to return to them willingly. Operators that are uncomfortable while operating vehicles will have higher instances of ergonomic related injuries resulting in high workman's compensation claims, and time off.

Ergonomic interface, and Ergonomic investigations, and studies, should be provided for key areas where interface to humans is of primary concern . e.g., operator's cab's, passenger flow and seating, as well as maintenance access functions.

Ergonomic considerations for the operator are in Operator Ergonomics.

Standard: MIL-STD-1472F - Department of Defense Design Criteria Standard, Human Engineering
Purpose: This standard establishes general human engineering criteria for design and development of military systems, equipment, and facilities. Its purpose is to present human engineering design criteria, principals, and practices to be applied in the design of systems, equipment and facilities so as to achieve required performance by operator control and maintenance personnel, minimize skill, personnel requirements, and training time, achieve required reliability of personnel, equipment combinations, and foster design standardization within and among systems.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard
Usage: ... ergonomic studies and human engineering shall comply with MIL-STD-1472F
Standard: 29 CFR 1910 - Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Labor
Purpose: The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, provides occupational safety or health standards for employees. The common application of this act with respect to the transit industry is to enforce standards for the safety and health of the employees manufacturing, maintaining, or operating transit vehicles.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard
Usage: ... the employee workplace environment shall comply with 29 CFR 1910
Standard: ANSI Z400.1 - Hazardous Industrial Chemicals - Material Safety Data Sheets - Preparation
Purpose: This Standard applies to the preparation of MSDSs for chemicals and materials used under occupational conditions. It presents basic information on how to develop and write MSDSs that are complete, clear and consistent. It also identifies information that must be included to comply with the HCS. Additional information is provided to help comply with state and federal environmental and safety laws and regulations. With the addition of certain data elements, this Standard is also acceptable for international use.
Criteria: Specify compliance with standard
Usage: ... MSDS shall be provided that comply with ANSI Z400.1
