Corrosion Control

Due to the wide variety of environmental conditions that passenger transit rail vehicles frequently operated in, corrosion control is the major importance in maintaining the structural integrity of the vehicle. The following documents provide guidelines and direction for the design and assembly of vehicles that will preclude unnecessary corrosion.

Standard: UMTA-DC-06-0152-83-1 - A Corrosion Control Manual for Rail Rapid Transit
Purpose: The objective of the manual is to aid rail rapid transit agencies by providing practical solutions to selected corrosion problems. The scope of the manual encompasses corrosion problems of the facilities of rapid transit systems: structures and tracks, platforms and stations, power and signals, and cars. It also discusses stray electric current corrosion. Both design and maintenance solutions are provided for each problem. Also included are descriptions of the types of corrosion and their causes, descriptions of rapid transit properties, a list of corrosion control committees and NASA, DOD, and ASTM specifications of reports and a glossary of frequently used terms are provided.
Criteria: Specify standard name to be followed
Usage: ...Corrosion control shall follow the guidelines in UMTA-DC-06-0152-83-1.
Standard: MIL-STD-889 - Dissimilar Metals
Purpose: This standard defines and classifies dissimilar metals, and establishes requirements for protecting coupled dissimilar metals, with attention directed to the anodic member of the couple, against corrosion.
Criteria: Specify standard name to be followed
Usage: Shall comply with MIL-STD-889
Standard: SAE J447 - Prevention of Corrosion of Motor Vehicle Body and Chassis Components
Purpose: This report covers corrosion preventive methods commonly used for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The standard is based upon the automotive industry but has many applications applicable to passenger transit rail vehicles.
Criteria: Specify standard name to be followed
Usage: ...Corrosion control shall follow the corrosion preventive methods in SAE J447
